A New SUV Comparison: 2022 Kia Sorento vs. 2022 Toyota Highlander
2022 KIA Sorento or the 2022 Toyota Highlander?

If
you are in the market for a new crossover SUV, you’ll find plenty of choices in
this segment. Two of the top models are the 2022 KIA Sorento and the Toyota Highlander. Which one you choose
will depend on what matters most to you. Here is a comparison to see how the
two models line up.
More
Options
Both
the KIA Sorento and Toyota Highlander are strong competitors in the
seven-passenger crossover SUV category. Both offer standard seven-passenger
seating, available all-wheel drive platforms, and hybrid powertrain options.
The first noticeable difference between the two models is the price tag. KIA
starts out with a much lower MSRP than the Highlander, with the base model
Sorento at about $5,000 lower than the Highlander. KIA also offers a plug-in
hybrid option not found on the Highlander. The KIA warranty is another area
where the Sorento wins out. With a basic warranty of 5 years or 60,000 miles, it
beats out the Highlander at three years or 36,000 miles.
Premium
Efficiency
The
2022 KIA Sorento uses a 2.5L I4 gas engine, providing 191 horsepower, while the
turbo version produces 281 hp. The plug-in hybrid model has a responsive 261 hp
and 258 lb.-ft of torque, offering an estimated 35/33 MPG engine and electric
motor. The Sorento comes standard with front-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive
options are available. All variants use a quick-shifting eight-speed
dual-clutch automatic transmission. Sorento beats out the Highlander for
efficiency, with the base model at 24 mpg in the city compared to 21 mpg for
Toyota. This allows for a range of 425 miles in the city over the 376 of the
Highlander.
Premium
Comfort
The
2022 KIA Sorento comes standard with second-row captain’s chairs and third-row
seating for seven. It’s easier to get to the third row with the captain’s
chairs in place while giving second-row passengers more space to stretch out.
The driver can relax with the 14-way power adjustable seat with two-way lumbar
support. For a little extra luxury, the higher trims come with cooled front
seats and climate control.
Advanced
Technology
Both
models come loaded with features you want to see in a vehicle. They include a
smart power liftgate, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless charging, and
heated front seats. Safety is advanced as well, with lane departure warning and
lane keeping assist standard on the higher trim levels of both the KIA Sorento
and Toyota Highlander. Rear parking assist is another feature you will
appreciate on both models, which have received high test ratings.
You can’t go wrong with either model, but the
2022 KIA Sorento offers a few more choices in power and efficiency to consider.
